The ruling athletics body IAAF on Monday
withdrew from the SportAccord umbrella organization after SportAccord
chief Marius Vizer launched an all-out attack on the International
Olympic Committee.
"We are unable to agree with the contents and tone contained in the
speech of the SportAccord President Mr Vizer at the opening this
morning," IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said in an e-mailed statement.
"So this resignation is a protest against the position taken by Mr
Vizer against the IOC and his statements about the position of the
International Federations viz a viz the IOC which the IAAF cannot
accept."
With IOC president Thomas Bach present, Vizer said the IOC system was
"expired, outdated, wrong, unfair and not at all transparent. The
Olympic Games belong to all of us and we need real reforms."
Vizer said in his opening speech at the Sochi SportAccord convention
the IOC could be "headed for destruction" if it does not reform
itself, grant sports federations more power and stop interfering in
the autonomy of sports organizations.
He added in the direction of Bach: "I always tried to develop a
constructive collaboration with the IOC and with President Bach. ...
Unfortunately, it never became reality."
While the IAAF took immediate action, other federations reportedly
signed a letter dismissing Vizer's statements. The Olympic summer
sports federations were to meet Tuesday over the issue.
SportAccord represents Olympic and non-Olympic sports federations.
Vizer, on the job since 2013, also wants to stage "United World
Championships" for all sports in a direct challenge to the IOC and
its Games, but this yet to happen. Instead Vizer said that Sochi will
host the first World Beach Games in 2019 set up by SportAccord.
