Retired football star Diego Maradona said
Thursday he was enchanted by Pope Francis, speaking after being given
an audience by the pontiff, a fellow Argentine.
Maradona was at the Vatican to support Scholas, an educational
foundation backed by the pope that organizes charity football matches
to raise money for poor children.
"We talked about a lot of things, about the commitment of players to
get together and to something for children who are not eating in many
parts of the world," Maradona said of the meeting he had with the
pontiff.
In quotes carried by Vatican Radio, Maradona called Francis "a
phenomenon" and "fantastic," and added: "Today I can say that I am a
fan of Francis. I am Francis' biggest fan."
Scholas organized a press conference with Maradona where it was
announced that its next charity match will take place in Rome's
Olimpico stadium in October.
The first so-called Match for Peace, held on September 1 in the same
venue, with the participation of Lionel Messi, Andrea Pirlo and other
star players, raised 900,000 euros (971,000 dollars), the foundation
said.
