Olympic and two-time slalom world champion Mario Matt is retiring after 15 years on the alpine skiing World Cup circuit. "I have discovered in the course of the season that ski racing is no longer the most important thing in my life," the 35-year-old Austrian told reporters in St Anton Thursday. Slalom specialist Matt won 15 World Cup races, 14 in slalom and one combined, and in Sochi last year became the world's oldest Olympic alpine skiing gold medallist with victory in the slalom. He won slalom gold medals at the 2001 and 2007 world championships along with a team event gold in 2007. A slalom bronze followed at the 2013 worlds, while he also has a combined silver medal from 2001. The current season has, however, been a disappointing one. Matt went out in the first slalom run at the world championships in Vail/Beaver Creek, Colorado last month while his best World Cup result was a 12th place in Kitzbuehel, Austria. His last World Cup victory came in the slalom at Val d'Isere, France in December 2013. Matt is nursing an ankle injury and won't start in the two remaining slaloms this season - in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia on Sunday and Meribel, France next week. For the final race in Meribel, he would not be qualified on current standings. | |||||
